Diary of a Roman Girl

Diary of a Roman Girl

Property Of Octavia Flavia Poplicola

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Now that someone has convinced Nero that we Christians are in need of ‘disposing of’, he’s started executing us! If we are not careful, my Mater, my Pater, my brother Marcus, younger sister Claudia and I will be caught and executed! We must be very careful. We cannot be caught.

I wish we were not in so much danger. But we will not give up our faith just for this! That would be foolish. God will look after us, I am sure of it.

Nero is a great danger to all of us.

I hope my dear friend Miriam does not get caught, as she is one of us. If she was caught, her mother would be alone, because poor baby Hepzibah died. We were all devastated.

I must go help Mater and Pater now.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

We are being watched! Yesterday, Mater and I went to the market, and Mater shoved me into an alleyway! Nero’s Soldiers  went past, then Mater said it was ok to come out. After that, Pater said we mustn’t go anywhere unless we have to.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Miriam’s mater has been caught! Poor Miriam came to us yesterday, crying. She’s already lost her sister, and losing her mater means she has no one left except her aunt and uncle: Julia and Titus. She is staying with us until we can find where they are. I wish poor Miriam’s mater gets set free soon. But Nero has no mercy. He proved that when he killed his mater: Agrippina. I hope that Miriam’s mater is ok and that she knows how much Miriam misses her. I hope, for Miriam’s sake that her mater is ok.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Miriam’s mater has sent her a letter! Nero finally had some shame in what he is doing, though he has his guards check the letters before sending them. When Miriam received the letter she was crying with joy! The letter said that Miriam’s mater is ok but the prison cells are terrible. She hopes that Nero will set her free, but she does not think he will. Poor Miriam was crying as she read those words. Miriam will have no one left but her aunt and uncle, but Mater can’t seem to locate them. Poor Miriam is crying all the time now, in worry for her mater. I hope, almost as much as Miriam does, that her mater is ok and is set free. But I too, share Miriam’s mater’s doubts.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

I’m crying as I write this. Nero has had no mercy on Miriam’s poor mater. He has… killed her! Miriam was hysterical when Nero’s soldiers put up the list of Christians who had been executed and she saw her mater’s name! I HATE Nero! He has to stop. I hope Miriam’s aunt and uncle will care for her and look after her.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Miriam’s aunt and uncle have sent a letter to her! It was received at her mater’s house, so the landlord gave it to mater, to give to Miriam.. Miriam was happy to hear from her aunt and uncle. They said they would come to our house on Saturday (two days from now) and stay until noon on the Wednesday. I’m glad Miriam can stay for a little bit longer, and that she will only live an hour away! She is my best friend and I’ll really miss her. These days I can’t even go to school, it’s that dangerous, and Mater only goes to the market if she has to.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Miriam’s aunt and uncle were very kind to her, and they said that they’d take good care of her. I’ll really miss Miriam, but I know that it’s best for her to go live with her aunt and uncle.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Miriam and her Aunt Julia and Uncle Titus are leaving tomorrow! Miriam and I cried when we realised! I will miss her so much! I can’t keep writing, I must go help Miriam pack.

Signed Octavia

  1. 5. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Our rabbi has been caught and executed! Now his wife and four children have no one to provide for them! Mater took a care package for them. They were very grateful. And Miriam has left with her Aunt and Uncle. Today is a very sad day.

Signed Octavia

  1. 6. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Pater has been… caught! He was out at work when the soldiers came and dragged him away! Mater started crying when she found out! I did too! My brother and sister do not know yet. They will be so upset. I miss Pater already. : (

Signed Octavia

  1. 6. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Mater has been caught too! I’m very worried that Marcus, Claudia and I will be caught as well.

Signed Octavia

  1. 7. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

I haven’t written to you for more than 2 weeks. That is because, Marcus, Claudia and I were taken to prison! They have freed us for the moment because we are children, but as soon as Marcus turns 14 and I turn 12 they are planning to take us back to prison if we do not give up our faith! I will not yield. Though I am not sure about Marcus, I think that he will ‘stand firm in the faith’, as Pater put it. Alas, we have not heard from him since Mater got caught. The last letter he sent said:

  1. 6. 64 AD

My dear girls and son,

I’m ok at the moment though Nero is not in his kindest mood. I hope you all stay healthy. Stay safe my chickies and hold on. I will be out as soon as I can (though I doubt that will be ever). I hope you are all well and stay safe. If Mater gets caught, Marcus, you are in charge. I hope it doesn’t come to that. Take care my chickies.

Until next time my chickies, even if it’s not till the afterlife. Goodbye for now.

With love, Pater (Octavius Claudius Poplicolus)

Scroll, you can only imagine our tears and our faces as we read that letter. We were so shocked.

I hope he is ok but I fear the worst. Also Mater is to be put on trial! I am to be in the crowd.

Signed Octavia

  1. 7. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Today we were informed that if Pater does not promise to give up our faith then he will be executed or… used as a human candle! I hope that he does not give up our faith, but that he is not executed or used as a candle, but I fear that he will not give up the faith and will die at Nero’s hands. Tomorrow is Mater’s trial along with 5 other women. They will be judged by Olivius Antonius Bato.

Mater is the youngest in the group. The others are either elderly or at least in their 40s. Mater is only in her latest 20s. She is worried that they will pity the elderly women but they will have no mercy on her as she is younger than the others. I am worried they will kill them all. Among them is Miriam’s grandmater’s friend and (her grandmater’s friend’s) cousin. Miriam might be there for her grandmater so she is not alone if her friends are judged guilty.

I think that this is a set up to make lots of us from the faith come and meet so Nero can catch many of us at once. I pray to God, that everyone will be ok.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Mater’s trial was yesterday. I was right. It was a trick to make many of us gather in one place. It worked. So many of us turned up! Many people were taken by the soldiers. It was horrible. Luckily, Mater escaped! That was such a happy time. But now we are in hiding, because if Mater is found, she will be put to death with no hesitation!

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

We heard from Pater today! He is ok, but he must serve as Nero’s servant for 10 years at least! I am just happy that he is not been executed. : ) Mater is beside herself with joy, though she thinks that Nero is being rather selfish. Marcus and Claudia are also very happy! We wish that Pater could come home, but we understand that Pater must prove his loyalty to Nero. We miss Pater and his silly jokes.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Pater decided to attack Nero and now we are all under arrest. I am with Mater and Claudia, and Marcus is in the cell next to us with Pater. Mater, Claudia, Marcus, and I are not shackled, but Pater is as he is labelled as a dangerous criminal. : ( I don’t know why he attacked Nero, and he will not say why. I wish he had not because now we will all be executed at this rate. : (

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Pater is being put on trial. His trial will be in 3 days. We are required to watch the trial. Mater does’nt want to, but Nero is not to be argued with. Marcus and Claudia have been in tears since they took Pater. They moved Marcus into our cell after they moved Pater. They took him to cells that are nowhere near as nice as ours.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

We are about to be taken to Pater’s trial. Mater is worried that he will be executed, but I was told that those who commit treason, are to be stripped naked! And afterwards, to be whipped to death! I would hate for that to happen. I must go now, for the guards are here to take us to the Senate for the trial.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Pater has been sentenced as I feared he would be: a typical traitor’s death. He will die on 1. 9. 64 AD. Mater, Marcus, Claudia and I burst into tears when the sentence was given. My tears are still falling now.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

We have been given a date for a trial. We will be sentenced with 16 other Christians, on the 10. 9. 64 AD. Including me, Mater, Claudia and Marcus, there are 12 boys and 8 girls. I am worried that the boys will get a more harsh sentence than the girls.  I must go now. Mater is calling me.

Signed Octavia

  1. 8. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Pater is to die tomorrow! Mater, Marcus, Claudia and I have to stay here, in our cell, while he is killed. Mater says she will not give up her faith, no matter what. I won’t yield either. I am worried about Marcus and Claudia though. They may give in if they are tortured.

Signed Octavia

  1. 9. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

Tomorrow is the trial! Time has gone so fast! I’m very nervous. Marcus and Claudia, said they will not give up the faith, but I still fear for them.

Signed Octavia

  1. 9. 64 AD

Dear Scroll,

This may be my last entry! As we are to have our trial in half an hour, this may well be the last time I write to you! As this may be my last entry, I am going to write my will.

I, Octavia Flavia Poplicola, write this will in the presence of: My mater – Marcia Claudia Poplicola, my brother – Marcus Octavius Poplicolus, my sister – Claudia Marcia Poplicola and my inmates – Domitius Augustus Favonius, Domitia Augustina Favonia, Jonathon Ben Malachi and Eleora Ben Malachi.

My diary will go to my dearest friend Miriam as will my clothes, jewellery and makeup. My books can be sold and the money given to Miriam’s Aunt and Uncle. My Holy Book can go to the rabbi’s family. My toys can go to the children of the royal household (if there are any). Any money I have, Nero can take. All I ask is that my body is buried with my families’ bodies.

Signed

Octavia Flavia Poplicola

Marcia Claudia Poplicola

Marcus Octavius Poplicolus

Claudia Felicia Poplicola

Domitius Augustus Favonius

Domitia Augustina Favonia

Jonathon Ben Malachi

Eleora Ben Malachi

For maybe my last entry ever.

Signed Octavia Flavia Poplicola.

24.3.65 AD

My name is Miriam Ben Isaac. Octavia was my best friend. Unfortunately, she was executed the day she wrote her last entry. When I was given Octavia’s possessions, I realised that she was gone forever. When I read the entries in her diary, I started crying. I realised I hadn’t been able to visit her for a whole of 4 months! We used to see each other every day! I loved Octavia like my own sister, which is saying a lot. My mater also died at the hands of Nero, just like Octavia. I miss them, and my sister. I was happy to hear that Octavia’s last wishes had been listened to. My mater’s wishes also were (listened to). I myself was lucky not to get caught. I wish they were here. All I am writing here for is to show how cruel Nero really was to me and the people I loved. Nero is the cruellest man I’ve ever met, and yes I’ve met my mater’s murderer! I want whoever finds this to realise what a cruel man Nero really is. If someone finds this after I die, and Nero is still alive, punch him for me. Next year I will be married to a young man, Aaron at the young age of 13! Aaron is such a kind young man. He will soon be a senator!

Signed Miriam Ben Isaac

I’m touched that you credited me. I have a few pieces of feedback. I thought a rabbi is Jewish. Also you should paint Octavia as a rich girl who has to escape, as that explains why she can write.

Exactly what I meant when crediting you! Rabbi's are Jewish, but as I was in yr7 when writing this, I didn't really think about it. Especially since Christianity stemmed from the Jewish religion.

I think Octavia isn't pictured as rich, but not really as poor.

Though I suppose a landlord would suggest they are "renting".

You could change it up to at least suggest that they owned their own house and we’re secure financially

Yeah. I just almost don't want to edit it. Cause it'd feel like I'm changing a story that's sort of important to me. Yeah idk. I might change it on Wattpad.

It's okay if you don't. I think it has potential, if you don't mind me asking, who is the target audience

Honestly? No idea.

We had to write a creative story as part of an assignment. I think it had to be diary form (I don't remember). So yeah. I honestly have no idea.
